Sometimes waste and non-value added activities are readily visible. Product spillage and production line stops are often easy to see. Sometimes waste and non-value added activities are hidden or difficult to identify.

The Data Collection plan will help identify waste and non-value added activities.

1.Data Collection Plan

A strong data collection plan includes a time based component (e.g. hour-minutes) and quantity (weight, distance, occurrences). Including notes or observations take during the data collection will help when sharing the results of the data collection effort. With the data collection completed, let’s make it visual.

Be prepared for a second round of data collection – the first round often uncovers new insights!
